The Del Mar Heights community is both family-oriented and affluent. While a small piece of Del Mar Heights touches the Pacific coastline, the majority of the community spreads inland on the hillsides of Northern San Diego. The Heights neighborhoods are anchored by Interstate 5 and Del Mar Heights Road, which provide convenient access to greater San Diego and southern Orange County. Being primarily a residential area, Del Mar Heights is somewhat insulated from the seasonal inflow of San Diego tourists.
Greater San Diego offers many attractions and activities. The natural attractions within driving distance include California’s deserts, mountains and beaches. Plus, the two thousand acres of protected lands within the Torrey Pines State Reserve are practically in the backyard of Del Mar Heights. The reserve includes a lagoon and miles of beaches and undeveloped chaparral. Visitors can enjoy guided and unguided nature walks. This community has also received national attention from the golfing community as the home of the well-known Torrey Pines Golf Complex. The two-course facility is owned and operated by the city of San Diego and has hosted PGA Tour events and the annual Buick Invitational. The South Course at Torrey Pines will host the 2008 U.S. Open Championship. Big name San Diego attractions include LEGOLAND California, Sea World, San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park. Residents can also spend afternoons exploring the many distinct districts of the city, like the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy. Cultural activities such as community theatre performances and local art galleries can also be found throughout the city, many of which are tailored to the tastes of their own neighborhoods. San Diego's climate is one of the most tolerable, even for sunny Southern California. The ocean breezes generally keep the temperatures below 80 degrees, even in the warmest summer months. The sun shines almost 70% of the time, allowing residents to enjoy a year-round, outdoor lifestyle. The coolest months, December and January, rarely see temperatures below 45 degrees. Annual precipitation is normally about 10 inches. |
